Infographic: Mudik 2016 Prediction by Traveloka

Traveloka, Indonesia’s fastest-growing tech company that provides online booking service for flights and hotels, released an infographic about Lebaran season in 2016 to give a deep overview of this annual phenomenon.

From the Ministry of Transportation data, at least 1 out of 4 travellers will prefer to use airplane for Mudik. It is estimated that the air traveller will increase 7.6% (y/y) or about 4.6 million people. The air transportation contributes the highest increment when compared with other modes of transport. This data confirms that traveller is more likely to choose airplane for mudik because it gets easier to book flight online, even now people can book flight on-the-go using a smartphone.

On this annual mass exodus season, Traveloka’s internal data shows that traveller seems to be enthusiastic to welcome Lebaran by planning their travel itinerary as early as possible. According to the booking history from the past years, 60% of traveller book tickets start from the beginning of Ramadan. Not to mention, the assurance of the flight schedule has also become the main concern for them as 75% of traveller bought the return ticket in a single booking code.

To make travel more convenient, Traveloka recommends traveller to book the flight ticket as soon as possible. CEO Traveloka, Ferry Unardi said, “We are suggesting traveller to book their flight on 30 days to 15 days prior Eid Al-Fitr because on that period of time the flight ticket is relatively cheaper and lots of promotions is still available. By booking as early as possible, traveller can save up to 10% for their flight ticket.” According to Traveloka’s data, the price for flight ticket could soar up to 2.7 times the normal price 7 days before Eid Al-Fitr.

Based on the numbers of flight search for mudik, Traveloka predicts the top destinations during Lebaran are Surabaya, Padang, Jogja, Makassar, and Denpasar. Although Denpasar is not a mudik destination, the beauty of this island attract a lot of travellers who wanted to spend the Lebaran season with vacation.
